The Estimate, a biweekly newsletter on the Islamic world and its neighbors, has been published every two weeks since 1989. Its 12-page format provides political and security intelligence analysis of The Middle East and North Africa, Central and South Asia and the Caucasus. Its various departments provide background data, current assessments, risk analysis, biographical material and other information aimed at providing readers with the tools to make their own assessments. The Estimate is the flagship of The International Estimate, Inc., which provides consulting services and occasional monographs on the areas dealt with by The Estimate.

The Editor of The Estimate and President of The International Estimate, Inc. Is Michael Collins Dunn, Ph.D. who has taught at Georgetown University and Utah State University, and also currently serves as Editor of The Middle East Journal.

Each issue of The Estimate contains a four-page Dossier providing an intensive backgrounder on a topic or institution of current interest. Two more pages are devoted to a lead story on a major subject. Other departments include:

• Between the Lines: Major news stories of the previous two weeks, analyzed in the context of their background.
• Listening Post: Shorter news items of record.
• Profiles: Biographical sketches of individuals in the news.
• Defense Briefs: A page devoted to defense and security issues.
• Coffeehouse Gossip: A “gossip column” dealing with the wilder rumors, unsubstantiated allegations, and speculations which circulate in the region but are not substantiable as news.
• Forward Tracking: A brief look at forthcoming events likely to affect the region.
• Occasional Departments also include The Islamic World Online, introducing important sites, and occasional Book Reviews.

Visitors who are not familiar with The Estimate may wish to browse the Table of Contents of the current issue, which includes links to the text of at least one article in the issue.
