Bright Star is Outshined

On October 13, the United States, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, and six European allies will carry out the Bright Start exercises in Egypt. This year marks 20 years since the first Bright Star exercise in 1981, and the exercises have generally been held every two years. Though the number of US forces participating this year is down from 1999 (to 14,000, down from 18,000), the whole exercise has clearly been overshadowed by the buildup against Afghanistan. Both Bright Star and the British Swift Sword naval maneuvers with Oman were planned before the September 11 bombings, but also mean that substantial US and British forces were already scheduled to deploy to the region in October anyway.
