A Delicate Balance

The US is doing a better job than some may have expected of clearly distinguishing between its war on terror and the perception that it is preparing to war on Islam. The emphasis on food aid to Afghanistan's refugees, for example, seeks to make clear that the Afghan people are not the target, and there is clearly a new effort to move the Israeli-Palestinian confrontation to a less intense level.

But there is still a delicate balance to be maintained. The US' adversaries, particularly Bin Ladin's supporters but also a broad range of critics ranging from Iraq through various Islamist movements, will be trying hard to portray the US actions, whatever form they take, as a "Crusader" assault on Islam.

Although some US pundits with the omniscience of op-ed writing are calling for an assault on a wide range of countries, the US Administration seems to have done a better job of focusing on a single target, and distinguishing that target from the background, than some might have expected. That focus needs to be maintained.
